2026 Semester Weeks 4 + 5: Breaking Ground!
A big week for the semester class last week! On Monday, we were able to finalize plans for the deck of our cabin, accompanied by a short lecture on framing to help prepare us for Tuesday, which marked the beginning of building. We hit the ground running and, in one afternoon, were able to assemble the main structure of the deck with only a few missing joists.
On Wednesday, we continued work in the studio, piecing together our final plans to begin the next phase and looking through past projects on campus to give us a reference point for what we are building towards. Chris West ended the day with a lecture on mechanicals and overall building science, giving us knowledge on the mechanics of our building, where to shop for them, and how they differ.
On Thursday, we spent time in the studio putting together framing plans, ordering windows, hammering joist hangers, and learning more about building science in preparation for our lecture on Friday morning by Megan Nedzinski. Megan gave us an in-depth lecture on building science and helped give us more direction on roof and wall sections, explaining not just how, but why. We finished the day putting down the subfloor on the deck and working with Nick, going over material lists, Gantt charts, and the overall timeline for the rest of the semester.
This week, we'll continue to split time between the studio and the hangar, hoping to finalize more construction documents and begin raising walls. We'll also be breaking up the week with a trip to Montreal on Tuesday, led by Britton!
