Two people work together shaping a straw bale inside a partially built structure made of straw walls. One person wears a sleeveless red shirt and light shorts, while the other wears a wide-brimmed hat, gloves, and a purple shirt.

A 5 day exploration of natural wall systems

This one-week course is a module of the Natural Building Certificate.

Walls define space, they are the conversation between the exterior elements and the ideal interior space we want to create. There is a wide variety of natural wall systems to choose from though they all strive to create comfortable, healthy, beautiful spaces. We will learn how to choose an appropriate wall system based on context – which includes site, climate, resources, location and budget. In this class we will be covering the basics of Straw Bale Construction, Light Clay Straw and other infill systems, thermal mass walls, as well as the types of framing and form work required for each system. We will also cover the more conventional green alternatives currently available to the home builder such as Cellulose and Wool. In addition to hands-on techniques, be ready to discuss the meaning of ‘R-values’, infiltration, solar potential and thermal mass, and how we can make better use of these principles in our homes.
