The Mansfield Stone Hut pictured post-fire renovation in the snow

with Katelyn Hudson

Originally built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1935, the Stone Hut on Mount Mansfield served as a warming shelter for hikers and skiers enjoying Vermont’s highest peak. In late 2015, a fire gutted the historic structure, raising urgent questions about preservation. Through a remarkable collaborative effort led by the Vermont Forests, Parks, and Recreation in partnership with Donald P Blake Jr., Inc. and Northern Architects, the Stone Hut was thoughtfully rebuilt and reopened less than a year later. This talk explores the hut’s layered history, and its post-fire reconstruction from a member of the design team.

Historic Preservation Speaker Series: Meaning, Memory, and Stewardship

This talk is presented as part of our Spring 2026 Speaker Series. All talks are free and open to the public, and take place Wednesday evenings from 6:30 - 8 pm. No registration required, just drop by. Join us in person or online via livestream on our YouTube channel.

Twice a year, we curate a series of lectures on a design/build theme. This Spring, we will take on a historic preservation theme and look at case studies, state-wide policy and funding, and retrofitting for modern efficiency standards.
