Natural Foundations
Exploring Low-Impact Foundation Systems for Sustainable Building
This one-week course is a module of the Natural Building Certificate.
Foundations are the connection between the earth and our built environment. Foundations speak heavily of how a building relates to its environment. Most conventional foundations use large amounts of concrete, a high-embodied energy material, contributing large amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere. This class will explore many of the low-cement options available for the natural builder, including rubble trench, lavacrete, stone, insulated concrete forms, gravel bags, and more.
