Two people work on framing a building with trees and sky in the background

Our flagship two-week design/build course in architectural design and carpentry skills.

Offered since 1980, this course is the heart of our curriculum. It’s perfect for those who want to take a hands-on role in designing and building a home—or simply want the knowledge to collaborate effectively with architects and builders. It also serves as a strong introduction for anyone considering a career in architecture or construction.

Through hands-on building, studio design work, lectures, house tours, and group discussions, you’ll gain the essential skills to create a home that reflects your values. In the studio, you'll explore site analysis, programming, sketching, and model-making. On the job site, you'll learn basic carpentry techniques and get comfortable with power tools.

By the end, you’ll leave with schematic floor plans, a scale model, and section and elevation drawings of your own design.
