Location: Ithaca, NY, in-person

Terms: Casual Employment

Pay Rate: $360 per class + mileage reimbursement up to $300

(mandatory training session will be paid at a rate of $17/hour)

 

About Hammerstone

Hammerstone School, an Ithaca, NY nonprofit (since 2024, founded 2013), teaches carpentry to women and gender minorities through short (1-5-day), year-round workshops. 

 

Our philosophy is that everyone can learn in a supportive environment. Instructors teach with humor and humility, actively addressing all learning challenges.

 

Course Overview

Basic Carpentry Skills 101 (BCS 101) is Hammerstone’s core course. In this class students will learn to build sawhorses while mastering tool use, measuring, cutting (handsaw/circular saw), and fastening (screws/nails).

 

Position Overview

The Basic Carpentry Skills 101 Instructor will lead students through our curriculum with kindness, empathy, and connection. 

 

Responsibilities

  • Follow the content and timing of Hammerstone’s 2-Day Basic Carpentry Skills 101 curriculum
  • Maintain a safe and inclusive learning environment
  • Remain current with carpentry practices, tools, and teaching strategies to enhance instruction
  • Show up prepared and rested for all classes that you are scheduled to teach
  • Report critical information regarding facilities, tools, and students, to the Director of Operations
  • Participate in teaching debrief sessions after classes
  • Oversee the completion of teaching assistants' assigned duties
  • Ensure cleanliness of the workshop at the end of each day
  • Any duties assigned by the leadership team

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in construction
  • Expertise with power and hand carpentry tools; measuring and marking; construction materials and methods; plan reading
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to teach with compassion and empathy to students with a variety of experience levels, as well as physical and neurological differences
  • Ability to explain concepts clearly through a variety of teaching styles such as verbal, written, drawn, and demonstrated
  • Demonstrated patience
  • Effective verbal and written communication
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
