Guertin Park, Montpelier VT

In the middle of downtown Montpelier, right on the Winooski River and only a stone’s throw from the State House, is a strange 9’ by 26’ bump jutting from the bike path. It’s an empty, flat, unremarkable piece of pavement and fence that thousands of eyes scan over every day. Hundreds of legs walk and ride past. There’s nothing to see, and nothing there. But in a few weeks, there will be.

Matt Wolpe: Combining Design/Build and Social Justice

Matt Wolpe, co-owner of Just Fine Design/Build in Oakland, CA, finished his Yestermorrow internship—an intensive six-month “work and learn” experience—in 2008. That experience allowed Matt to complete a selection of courses that have made him “able to carve out a satisfyingly wacky niche of work that would not have been possible without the springboard of Yestermorrow.” Since leaving Yestermorrow, matt has worked to combine his design/build interests with education and social justice.

Students Build Fayston Elementary School Outdoor Classroom

Staff at the elementary school in nearby Fayston, Vermont were looking to create a natural “playscape” and outdoor learning space. They turned to Yestermorrow to build the center piece for their new playground and the Design/Build for Public Interest class was tasked with its creation and installation.
