Nature in the Home: Principles of Biophilic Design

Biophilic design is an approach to architecture and urban planning that seeks to connect people more closely with nature. Overall, biophilic design seeks to create spaces that not only look aesthetically pleasing but also contribute positively to the physical and mental health of the people who inhabit them, fostering a deeper connection with nature in an increasingly urbanized world.

This online workshop investigates the principles of biophilic design to help students understand how to harness the human-nature connection through the built environment, to promote both occupant and ecological well-being.  In addition to exploring the three main elements laid out in biophilic design, students will have the opportunity to apply these concepts in a small design project, encouraging self-reflection and creativity with a studio format that includes sharing and discussion with others.

Biophilic Design is a philosophy that can be utilized by anyone who interacts with the built environment from designers to occupants.  The workshop is intended to increase knowledge around the additional benefits of green design to our health, well-being, and comfort.

Online classes will meet on Mondays from 6-8 PM, for a total of 4 sessions.
