Increase your woodworking skills through learning to build a small hardwood shelf system. This class will teach a traditional style of solid wood furniture construction utilizing the sliding dovetail method. We will explore advanced router techniques, traditional joinery and treatment of wood from rough milled lumber to make a finished piece of furniture.
Each student will build their own small bookcase from hardwood, start to finish. We will use this piece to discuss overall techniques and applications in the furniture design/build process. The goal of this class would be that students can take techniques learned and apply them to future projects of their own. Students will also have a chance to use hand tools: including but not limited to Japanese handsaws, chisels and handplanes.
Students are expected to have completed an introductory woodworking course such as Intro to the Woodshop, Powertools for Women, Beginning Furniture Making, or Woodworking for Women. Similar courses from other schools or comparable experience is acceptable.
