Residential Construction Certificate

This 8 week intensive is an immersive and collaborative design/build experience. Using a shipping container as a framework for learning, students work together to explore many phases of construction from rough framing to interior finishing. The unique considerations of shipping container homes provide an excellent opportunity for understanding building science, space efficient design, and general construction. All concepts learned in this course could be applied to more conventional construction methods.

With a focus on creating a high performance building, students will gain experience with framing, insulation, mechanicals (including plumbing and electrical), kitchen/bath detailing, doors, windows and final finishes. It is important to note that this course will be working on a real project. As is the case with all construction projects, the timeline is impacted by many factors. We will work together to bring the project as close to completion as possible in the time frame of the course.

Students in this course will be combined with students in our Shipping Container Build Certificate. This program differs from our Certificate in Residential Design and Construction in that there is no formal design instruction and includes additional weeks dedicated to overall construction.
