Designed to integrate 3D visualization with technical drawing, Revit Architecture is a powerful computer software package used to develop design ideas from a napkin sketch through construction drawings. Students will learn the fundamental concepts of the program from instructors who use the program every day. The group will start by learning basic operations of creating walls, windows, floors and laying out their work on sheets. The instructors will discuss the practical advantages of implementing the software in a work environment and how it can streamline collaboration with other disciplines. On day two, instructors will answer questions from the previous day and progress into new topics such as rendering, shadows, dimensioning, and project rigor. On the last day, students will emulate real world workflow, experimenting with multiple team members simultaneously working in the same project.

Note: This workshop will take place at the computer lab at Vermont Technical College (VTC) in Randolph Center, Vermont, approximately 45 minutes from the Yestermorrow campus. Specific directions and logistics will be provided upon registration.

Intro to Revit Architecture

Day One

8:00 Step One: What is this Revit thing?

• Open up Revit and start a new project using the residential project template.

• Spend a few minutes checking out the ribbon, project browser and properties window.

• Review some basic tools. Walls, floors, roofs etc.

• Take a look at the quick key sheet (your BF).

Step Two: Time to build…

• Using the wall tool, create a 24’ x 26’ building. Be as accurate as you can.

• Create the interior partitions. Include those on the handout and any others you like.

• Note: Save your file every 30 min.

• Add the interior and exterior doors. Interior doors are 30” wide and exterior are 36” wide.

• Add windows in plan or elevation view.

• Go to the home > component> place component and select some plumbing fixtures from the pull down menu to place in bathroom. Arrange them as you like…. preferably in the bathroom. Same goes for the kitchen.

Step Three: Second Floor

• Go to second floor plan view and create the second floor partitions. Go to the Properties Browser and experiment with the underlay function by toggling it on and off.

• Create the second floor.

• Create the second floor partitions (with the correct height).

Step Four: Stairs

• Cut a 3’-4” x 14’ hole in the second floor.

• Build the stairs outside in the yard and move them inside.

• Make sure you are on the first floor level and use the Stair By Run Tool.

• Check to be sure you have 6’-8” head room all the way down the flight.

• Place a Building Section in your model cutting thru the stair and adjust your stairs as necessary.

Step Five:

• Place the second floor windows. Experiment with changing the type and head height by using the Properties Menu.

• Place some furniture and plumbing fixtures.

• Revit does not have every component imaginable so sometimes we have to get things off the internet.

Step Six: Rooms

• Place rooms in the second floor plan. Don’t worry about labeling them just yet.

• Place a Department Legend into the view.

• Click on the legend and then go to the Edit Scheme button to add new departments. Create departments called Bedroom, Bathroom, Kitchen, Living/ Dining Room and Circulation.

• Select each room and in the Properties Menu you can assign it to the correct department.

Homework:

• Start a New Project and draw a small building using the tools you learned in class.

• Utilize you other classmates and the Help Menu when you get stuck.

 

Day Two

8:00am

• Questions?

• Short demo presentation of a K-12 school Model.

Step Seven:

• Place “Rooms” into the first floor.

• Select each room and in the Properties Menu you can assign it to the correct department.

• Place additional annotation in the drawing.

• Experiment with changing the scale of the view and see how it impacts text size.

Step Eight: Roof(s)

• Build the high and low roof by using the Roof by Footprint Tool.

• Adjust for desired overhangs as needed.

• Attach the walls to the roof.

Step Nine: Porches

• Make second floor porch

• Make the wrap around low roof.

• Place the columns.

Step Ten: Detailing

• Create a building section

• Create a wall section

• Create some 1 ½” detail

Day Three

8:00am: What is this Work Sharing thing?

• Questions about homework?

Step Eleven: Form groups of three or four.

• Group leader will create a central file on the server

• All team members will save a local file to their computer.

• Using the handout plans for reference, start modeling the commercial mixed use project. Note: anyone unable to connect to the YM server for any reason will still be able to participate in the exercise.

Step Twelve:

• Now that all team members are working in the same model you can synchronize with the central model and see the work of all team members on your screen.

• Create the grids as indicated in the handout.

• Repeat steps seven and eight from day two. Be sure to ask questions if you get stuck. That point is to master the basics.

• Dimension you work in whole inches to the grid.

• Place you work on sheets.

• Model the curtain wall.

• Review what the work-sharing monitor is and what it is used for.

Step Thirteen:

• Brief discussion about file size management and errors.

• Back to work. Bring in a site plan from the server.

• Scale it up. Brief discussion about importing scale.

• Change the wall type and thickness without changing the interior dims.

• Review the wall location line.

Step Fourteen:

• Revit can create accurate shadows for the location. Figure out where the best palace is on your site is for a guardian or solar panel.

• Each person will crate one (or more) details at 1 ½” = 1’-0”

• Key your team mates details into wall section take from your part of the project. If you can master this on the third day, take a bow!
