In an effort to preserve scheduled availability, Yestermorrow Founder, John Connell, and long time instructor, Gio Susini, are offering a hybrid online and in-person version of the Home Design course. This will start online the week of March 23, and continue for 5 weeks, meeting online for approximately 3 hours each week, depending on class size. Additionally, all the students will convene directly with John and Gio at Yestermorrow for a full weekend of design, reviews, and final presentations. In addition to previous experience teaching our Home Design course, John and Gio have years of experience teaching other Yestermorrow courses online.
Our Home Design course typically focuses on hand drafting. This online/in-person hybrid will employ the use of SketchUp as the primary design tool. Students in this course will be able to download SketchUp at a discounted rate.
For those who are interested in this option, we will work together to pick a weeknight for the online meetings that best accommodates everyone’s schedules. Similarly, the on-campus segment of the course will be scheduled with input from all enrolled students.
This course teaches students how to design a home and communicate that design through floor plans, sections, elevations, and a scale model. Through conversation, lectures, and slides we explore such issues as site planning, climatic design, sustainability, building layout, structural principles, materials, energy conservation, solar strategies, and what makes a building a beautiful expression of its occupant's lifestyle. The class visits local homes to view original, creative, and traditional design concepts. Students learn the fundamentals of a design process that they can apply to their individual projects. This class is perfect for those interested in new home construction, remodeling or renovation, or exploring a new career.
