Constructing the Universe Through Geometry (Online)

View Syllabus

Geometry is everywhere - forming the basis of all design from quilts, buildings, paintings, sculpture, furniture, fashion, tile work, and origami, to the structure of the universe itself! Join us to explore this fascinating and useful branch of mathematics. Mornings will be spent constructing plane and solid geometric figures using only a straight edge and compass. Afternoons will be devoted to a mix of practical applications such as mini art projects, creative pattern making, solving descriptive geometry problems, calculating rafter layouts, estimating concrete, squaring a building, and fitting dormers to a model roof. Evenings will be spent designing a small house inspired by geometry. Topical slideshows accompany exercises for both the right (artistic) and left (engineering) sides of the brain.

Weekly online sessions will take place on Wednesdays from 6-8pm beginning September 2 and ending September 30. Students will work on assignments in between sessions.
