Rhythm, String, and Wind: Small Instrument Making

During this course students will learn how to use hand tools as well as shop machinery to create instruments unique to each student. Students will have to opportunity to design and build one or two instruments guided by instructors.

Rhythm - small tongue & cajon style drums

String - an Appalachian dulcimer, or a cigar box ukulele

Wind - river drone flute.

The ukulele and dulcimer projects will introduce the beginnings of making stringed instruments via template routing, hand shaping of neck/headstock, applying frets, and proper attachment of hardware. While the rhythm and wind section will also involve a mixture of woodworking joinery through machines and hand tooling. A jam session on your finished instruments will bring a close to this fun class.
