Passive House Carpenter & Builder

Paid employment opportunity for 3 to 4 Yestermorrow students with a strong passion for improving the built environment to support a Passive House retrofit in Woodstock, Vermont.

My family and I are retrofitting our 1,600 square foot house and would like to use this as a learning opportunity to give experienced Yestermorrow students who are motivated, organized, and dedicated, to learn from both an experienced Vermont based Passive House Lead Builder and a leading Passive House architecture firm.

The ideal candidates should be passionate and knowledgeable about high-performance buildings, in particular Passive House. The ideal candidates will have a desire to not only work under the supervision of an experienced builder but also be confident enough to work independently on site.

The successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to complete the following tasks with the technical and interpersonal skills outlined below:

Ability to follow specific instructions from the Lead Builder
True manual dexterity and firm grasp of safety
Conceptual understanding of wood frame construction
Basic tool use, accurate cutting, framing, and insulating
Ability to read construction plans, understands basic building science and building envelope details, and provide recommendations
Work with internal stakeholders including architect, energy modelers, sustainability consultants, accessibility consultants, etc

Below is a list of the minimum requirements for the position.

Required industry knowledge, and skills
2-10 years of relevant construction work experience

Preferred knowledge, and skills

Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management or related degree with an emphasis on buildings and their operation (or working toward)
Familiarity with Passive House Standards
Familiarity with Energy Code standards
Familiarity with Vermont Local Laws related to energy and climate
