Museum Preparator

Position Purpose
To support the museum’s priorities through the timely and thorough completion of all aspects of exhibition installation. To work in close consultation with the lead preparator and exhibitions manager to create installations that meet curatorial and registrarial requirements. To execute the safe handling and movement of artwork in support of the museum’s teaching and collections management priorities.

1-2 years of experience

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
● Two or more years of relevant experience in museum exhibition installations.
● Knowledge of matting, hinging, and framing of works on paper, object mount-making, lighting, or the presentation of new media.
● Knowledge of safe art-handling practices.
● Demonstrated understanding of methods and practices of exhibition installation.
● Proficiency with standard office editing and scheduling platforms.
● Ability to participate in a team-based environment.
● Ability to perform all routine installation tasks, handling objects, power tools, ladders.
● A valid driver’s license, and the ability to obtain and maintain Dartmouth Driver Certification, to drive museum vehicles to transport artwork.

Preferred Qualifications
● Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent combination of education and experience, with a
focus on art, art history, or material culture.
● Advanced experience in matting, hinging, and framing, or construction, crating, and case-building.
● Experience fabricating scale models and working with computer-based architectural
modeling programs.
● Proficiency in Adobe design applications.
