Internship Program

Yestermorrow Design/Build School inspires people to create a better, more sustainable world by providing hands-on education that integrates design and craft as a creative, interactive process. Located in the heart of the Green Mountains, Yestermorrow has been teaching professionals and homeowners since 1980.

Yestermorrow is the only school in the nation to offer a curriculum that integrates design education with hands-on building experience. Yestermorrow offers workshops and courses for novices and enthusiasts as well as a professional curriculum for students, architects and builders. Ranging from furniture making to home designing and building, Yestermorrow courses emphasize a holistic, informed, and ecologically sensitive approach to design and the use of materials.

More than 100 talented instructors arrive from across the country each year to share their knowledge and empower students of all ages to discover, shape and build their physical environment. By demystifying the complexities of the building process, faculty and staff guide each student to explore his or her individual voice, while offering valuable skills and techniques for understanding and building their designs within a larger context. The collective vision offered by the members of the Yestermorrow School supports collaborative participation and shared learning as essential components of an integrated curriculum.

Yestermorrow hires 6 interns per session (3 sessions per year). Selected candidates assist the staff and instructors in planning and facilitating courses and workshops, organizing tools and facilities, and providing office support. Interns play an important role in creating and supporting a positive learning environment at the School.

Specific responsibilities of the interns include but are not limited to:

•  Helping with campus construction and maintenance projects.
•  Providing administrative and project support to staff and instructors as needed.
•  Assisting with planning and coordination of conferences, lectures, and special events.

Qualifications for the position include:

•  A passion for design and construction.
•  An interest or background in architecture, engineering, or environmental studies is helpful.
•  Ability to have fun and remain flexible while maintaining organization and attention to detail.
•  Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
•  Learning objectives that coincide with the school's mission.

Internship Logistics

Internships are scheduled in 4 to 5 month sessions (3 sessions per year). College credit may be arranged directly with a student's home institution prior to arrival. For full-time interns, a $50/week stipend is provided. Interns also receive on-campus housing for the duration of their internship with shared bedrooms, bathrooms, and kitchen facilities. Interns must have health insurance in order to participate.

Interns may take a variety of Yestermorrow courses during their internship. On average, interns spend one week per month in class and the remaining three weeks working in various capacities at the school. Our office hours are 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday, although work hours are varied and average 40-50 hours/week. Interns are asked to be "on-duty" 2 weekends during their internship session, although they have most free and are welcome to take any weekend workshops at no charge if there is space available.

At the beginning of the internship, the Yestermorrow staff will meet with the intern to choose courses and discuss goals and potential projects. Interns are asked to develop an independent project during their time at the school. Past projects have included designing class projects (cabins, cabinets, storage), developing the website, and building improvements on the Yestermorrow campus.

Interns are provided with basic housing: a twin bed in a shared room, closet space, and access to a shared kitchen and bathroom. Personal transportation is recommended, due to our rural location, but not required (interns have limited access to School vehicles to run errands, get groceries, etc). A local access phone is available for intern use; a calling card is required to make any long distance calls.

Yestermorrow Design/Build School is a non-profit 501(c)(3) educational institution. Yestermorrow does not discriminate on the basis of race, sex, color, creed, or sexual orientation.
